Neonatal
Surgery
When it comes to our little ones, we want the very best for them. That’s why it’s essential to know about neonatal surgery – a specialised medical field that provides life-changing surgical treatments for newborns. With this in mind, Dr. Sello S Machaea, a Specialist Neonatologist, provides the higher risk / complicated neonates with the very best care.
If you know that you are expecting a baby with possible complications (e.g. cleft lip, cleft palate, renal abnormalities, a heart condition, twin pregnancy, immunodeficiency) please feel free to contact our rooms and discuss your delivery before the date.
Neonatal Surgery Treated Conditions
Congenital abnormalities
Some babies are born with physical or structural defects that require special operations to help them grow and develop normally. These include conditions such as anorectal malformations, intestinal atresia, omphalocele, gastroschisis and oesophageal atresia.
Gastrointestinal issues
Conditions like intestinal blockages, hernias and malrotation of the intestines can be taken care of through neonatal surgery. This means your baby can eat, digest and grow without any further discomfort.
Genital and urinary tract conditions
Dr. Sello S Machaea performs neonatal surgery in cases where newborns have ambiguous genitalia and urinary tract issues.
Abdominal wall defects – Gastroschisis and Exomphalos
Abdominal wall defects refer to birth defects where the layers of the abdomen including muscles and skin have failed to form properly. These include 2 main types of defects, namely Gastroschisis and Exomphalos.
Anorectal malformations (ARM)
Anorectal malformations are a wide spectrum of birth defects in the development of the lowest portion of the intestines including the rectum and anus, and often also involve the urinary tract. Children with these problems are often said to have an imperforate anus – meaning the anus is not open.
Respiratory problems
Problems like collapsed lung (pneumothorax) and an abnormal connection between the windpipe and food pipe (tracheoesophageal fistula) can be fixed with neonatal surgery. This means your baby will be able to breathe easily and sleep soundly.
